PURPOSE: Sam broke his nose in a rugby match he’s a strong guy but was particularly fed up as this was the first break in 10 years, the first game of the new season and the week before starting a new job!
Having photographed him countless times over the years, this presented us with a different opportunity and rather than shoot him with diffused (flattering) light that I’m normally drawn too, I decided to take this image using the late afternoon sun and let the shadows do what they do in creating an overall stronger and meatier ‘look’. By having Sam turn his head slightly it caused the side lighting to become a semi backlight which enhanced the shadows.
It was a conscious decision to let the eyes fill in with shadow thus drawing the attention to the plaster on his nose I think the overall effect would be weakened had we had visual connection with his eyes. The shadows further accentuate his expression which pretty much sums up how he was feeling at the time!
